Building a Wig Wardrobe

From family Thanksgivings and company Christmas parties to New Year’s Eve bashes, this time of year presents a variety of occasions where you’ll want to look your best. But that doesn’t mean you have to look the same!

“Today, wigs are much more than simply a solution to hair loss, they’re a form of self-expression,” says Designer & CEO, Alan Eaton. Building a wig wardrobe allows you to try different cuts, colors, and textures—AND turn a few heads in the process. And these tried-and-true tips can get you started.

Choose Quality Over Quantity

Avoid the temptation to buy a lot of cheap wigs and start with two or three well-made ones that fit YOUR lifestyle. ENVY’s shake-right-out-of the-box-and-go Synthetic Styles are great for those with little time to spend on their hair. If changing your style often is important, consider 100% Human Hair or our exclusive, lower-priced EnvyHairTM blend. Both can be curled, straightened, and blow dried just like natural hair. (And unlike natural hair, they can be styled ahead of time.)

Lastly, mix classic and on-trend looks the same way your wardrobe does, suggests Alan, whose NEW AMY is a sophisticated way to get in on the edgy asymmetrical trend—without ever cutting your hair.

Shop With Shape in Mind

You know which clothes flatter your figure—now find those wigs that best suit your face shape. You can balance a pear-shaped face with styles that give the appearance of width at the temples. While long, layered, and wavy styles can help soften a square face. (Click for tips to find the right wig for your face.)

Carley in Ginger Cream

“Meet” Bob.

If there’s one universally flattering style, it’s The Bob (which has been around for over 100 years). And ENVY has 38 to choose from. “It’s the perfect transitional day-to-night style” says Alan (who chose a breathable French lace base with late nights in mind). Face-shape “rules” still apply, with sharp Bobs (like CARLEY) best for oval-faces, and those with side parts (like BRITTANEY) balancing heart-shaped ones.

Think Outside Your Shade

While everyday wig-wearers often opt for shades that are close to their own, ENVY’s rooted colors give you the confidence to experiment—offering a multidimensional look so natural, people will think you came from a salon.

Petite Paige in Dark Red

Always envied red heads? When picking one of ENVY’s 4 multidimensional reds, consider your skin’s “undertone” (cool, neutral, or warm) AND your overall skin tone. Cool undertones work best with ginger or golden-strawberry shades (like Cinnamon Raisin), while people with warm undertones or darker skin tones should avoid golden shades and opt for bolder, brighter reds, (like ENVY’s Dark Red). Neutral undertones look good with most reds—especially burgundy or orange-y ones (like Lighter Red).

Want to make the same “silver” style statement Lady Gaga and Rhianna have (without dying your hair)? ENVY’s four greys range from the chic salt-and-pepper Sterling Shadow to the perfectly platinum, Light Grey.

If your self-image is irrevocably tied to a specific color, you can still shake things up.  A natural sandy blonde, for example, can channel her inner Marilyn Monroe with ENVY’s rooted Platinum Shadow.

Amber in Golden Nutmeg

You’ve Got Special Occasion Dresses?

Buy a special occasion wig! While the “Supermodel Blowout” trend will continue at salons this winter (low humidity a +), you can get this bombshell look anytime with our NEW CHRISTINE.  And the razored layers and bangs of our NEW AMBER will add contemporary chic to any holiday event.

Take Care (Whatever You Wear)

Finally, implement a regular maintenance routine, washing and conditioning your wigs every 5th wearing (or as needed). And only with products specially designed for your wig’s fibers.

“When carefully chosen and cared for, a wig wardrobe can expand your definitions of beauty and personal style,” says Alan (who continues to redefine what’s possible in natural-looking wigs).

Words of Wigdom
The secret to a perfectly natural look is a slightly imperfect part, says Designer and CEO, Alan Eaton. “Gently reposition strands along the part line or snip a few wispy pieces using manicure scissors—AND some restraint—for a slightly messy part that looks all your own.”

“Throughout my 20-year career, women’s comfort has always been at the top of my mind,” says Designer and CEO, Alan Eaton, whose Stretch Cap Technology hugs the perimeter while eliminating pressure points for maximum comfort.”

For first-time wig wearers, “The trick is to stay close to the color of your eyebrows,” notes Designer and CEO, Alan Eaton. If not, “then consider dyeing your eyebrows to match your chosen wig color.”

Words of Wigdom™
“Few people know that wigs can be styled just like natural hair—and that most hairstylists are happy to give your wig a custom cut,” says Designer and CEO, Alan Eaton. “Trimming bangs and shaping to your exact specifications can help make your wig indecipherable from your own natural hair.”

“The “Grey Hair, Don’t Care” trend—which saw women embracing their grey—is stronger than ever. And not just with the over-50 crowd. “Silver is chic, edgy and looks great on almost anyone,” says Designer and CEO, Alan Eaton, who offers nearly every EnvyHair™ and synthetic style in 3 multi-dimensional grey shades.”
