Keeping Your Wig Shipshape In Summer

Though many of us welcome the heat summer brings, we have to be aware that the bright rays of the sun can cause damage. Warmer weather often sends us into pools or the ocean, and chemicals and salt water can affect both natural hair and wigs. While the presence of sunshine shouldn’t keep you cowering indoors, you should take precautions to protect your hair from the elements.

The best advice is to treat your wig like it’s natural hair, but be more gentle. For example, you don’t want to dangle your wig over the open flames of a BBQ. All of Envy’s collections with synthetic hair from Lace Front to Open Top styles are designed with the utmost care and quality, but like with real hair, there are limits. You can absolutely wear them outside without worry, but don’t stay in direct sunlight for hours without protection. You shouldn’t do this with your natural hair either.

One easy and fashionable step to take to keep your wig looking gorgeous is to accessorize. Large floppy hats are made for afternoon walks or beach vacations. They can be cute or sophisticated depending on your outfit, and they’ll keep the sun off your wig and your face. Alternatively, you could wrap a scarf around your hair. Choose scarves made from lightweight fabrics such as silk for maximum comfort.

Removing your wig for water-based activities is the best option. It’s easier, but you do need to be mindful about where you store it while you’re out having fun. You should especially be careful when it comes to synthetic wigs. Don’t leave them in the trunk or backseat of a car, on the deck by the pool, or any place where they’ll be blasted with heat. Choose a cool place to put your wig, preferably indoors.

Finally, keep in mind that your wig will need a little extra attention and care during summer. The combination of sweat and sunscreen can lead to more build-up and oils than normal, and you’ll probably have to wash your wig on a more frequent basis to keep it fresh.  This is particularly true if you’re wearing it on a daily basis. Shorter hairstyles will be easier to maintain since you don’t sweat as much with them as you do with longer looks.
