Ready to Care for Your Ready-to-Wear Synthetic Styles?
Did you know you should never wear a synthetic wig while baking? Or that it’s possible to wash a wig too many times? Today’s synthetic fibers look so natural that it’s easy to forget they have unique rules to keep them looking their best.
Thankfully, our expert care tips are easy to remember.
Wash Smart.
Over-washing can stress synthetic fibers and shorten their lifespan. While washing too infrequently can let dirt and oils build up, causing fibers to deteriorate. While the general rule of thumb is to wash a wig after 5-6 wearings, it helps to consider your lifestyle. Wig-wearers who work out, for example, may want to wash their wigs more often (due to sweat and odor build up). Regardless of how frequently you wash your wigs, always use products specifically designed for synthetic fibers.
Avoid Heat.
The heat from a stove top or an oven’s open door can easily melt synthetic fibers. So it’s a good idea to have a TERRY TURBAN (or other headwrap) on hand when cooking. You should avoid extreme heat even when storing your wigs and always choose a cool, dry place. And while it may be tempting to dry your wig with a blow-dryer, please don’t. It can ruin a wig even when used on a low setting (unless that wig’s fibers are specifically labeled “heat-friendly.”)
Be Careful When Wet.
All ENVY ready-to-wear synthetic styles are made with 100% Kanekalon® fiber— renowned for holding its shade, shine, and shape. But the integrity of a wig’s shape can be lost if pulled over a wig stand when still wet. Wet fibers are especially susceptible to stretching, so never dry a wig by wringing it out (blot with a towel instead, before air-drying on a wig stand). And only comb out tangles when your wig is dry.
Comb Gently.
Tugging or stretching is your wig’s worst enemy—but there are simple ways to avoid it. Using a wide-tooth comb or wig brush to detangle a wig prevents pulling and minimizes the risk of any hand-tied knots loosening. If fibers are especially tangled, spray them with a leave-in conditioner before combing. (To prevent tangles from forming in the first place, take your wig off before going to bed.)
Protect Your Wigs Integrity!
Remember that different styles have different needs. You can keep the integrity of Flip Styles by holding your wig at the nape and combing upwards towards the crown, directing the ends outward for a turned-up appearance. To strengthen a wig’s Curl Pattern, place it on a wig stand, mist with water, and gather the fibers into a hair net to let air dry. (Then remove net and “scrunch” with fingers.)
Whether flipped, curly or straight, you can ensure your synthetic wig’s longevity by following a simple care and cleaning regimen. Watch ENVY U’s Synthetic Hair Care Video or download the Care Card at envywigs.com
